Weekly Marketing Rundown - Oct 6, 2023

Hi everyone,

In this week's edition of Kavanah Media's Weekly Marketing Rundown, we'll talk about multiple social networks planning to offer ad-free subscriptions, new generative AI tools for Meta advertisers, and Gmail's effort to cut down on spam mail in your inbox. Let's dive in.

Meta Plans to Launch an Ad-Free Subscription Model for EU Users

Pay for a subscription, or consent to personalized advertising? This is the question users of Meta's social media platforms will likely be forced to answer in the very near future. Per the Wall Street Journal, Meta is planning on launching an ad-free subscription model for users within the European Union. The plan is set to start at $14 per month for Instagram, with the payments going as high as $17 to access both Facebook and Instagram on desktop.

Meta has paid out hundreds of millions of dollars in fines to the EU so far as a result of the EU's data privacy laws (GDPR). As it stands, Meta is currently in violation of these rules. It's unclear whether this shift to a subscription model will satisfy EU regulators or not.

TikTok is Testing an Ad-Free Subscription Model

TikTok is testing an ad-free subscription model for their platform. As of now, the service is priced at $5 a month, roughly 1/3 the price of the rumored fee for Meta's ad-free subscription in Europe. According to TechCrunch, TikTok officials have stated that they are "testing this product but only in a single, English-speaking market outside the U.S." TikTok denied reports that this is coming to the United States.

Gmail Will Require Verification for Bulk Email Senders in 2024

In an effort to crack down on inbox spam, Google will require verification for bulk email senders to Gmail starting in 2024. Bulk email senders are defined by them as people sending 5,000 or more emails daily to Gmail accounts. On top of authentication, emails will be required to have a single-click opt-out function attached.

Meta Announces New AI Tools for Advertisers

Earlier this week, Meta unveiled new generative AI capabilities tailored for advertisers. These features help advertisers leverage AI for crafting backgrounds, enlarging images, and producing multiple iterations of ad text from their initial content. This introduction of new tools comes shortly after Meta Connect, the company's recent event, where they showcased various generative AI products such as stickers, editing tools, and smart glasses in partnership with Ray Ban, alongside the unveiling of the Quest 3 mixed-reality headset.

Weekly Marketing Rundown - May 3rd, 2024 Hi everyone, In this week's edition of Kavanah Media's Weekly Marketing Rundown, we'll talk about sitelinks coming to Meta Ads, Google automatically pausing low-activity keywords, and more. Let's dive in.  Meta Introduces Sitelinks for Ads Meta is rolling out an exciting update to Facebook Ads. Advertisers now can add site links to their ads within the Facebook Feed placement, a feature similar to that of Google Ads. This allows for the inclusion of multiple landing pages under a single ad's creative, enhancing the ad's interactivity and directing users to various pages directly from the ad itself. When users click on any of the site links, they are redirected to the designated landing page within the in-app browser. This will initially only be available in the Facebook feeds placement when rolled out to the public. This update is designed to help advertisers streamline their campaigns and focus on keywords that generate more significant interactions and results. The change is aimed at optimizing ad performance by reducing clutter and focusing resources on more effective keywords. Advertisers will be notified through their Google Ads interface if any of their keywords are being paused due to inactivity, allowing them to make informed decisions about their keyword strategies. This move marks a strategic expansion of advertising real estate, aiming to capture viewer attention during moments typically free from advertising. The pause screen ads will display static or dynamic content relevant to the viewer's interests, leveraging the moment when a viewer actively engages with the playback interface. This ad format is expected to roll out to other devices following the initial launch on TV screens, suggesting a broader strategy to monetize different user interactions across the platform. This initiative is part of Roblox's broader strategy to tap into new revenue streams while providing advertisers with access to a largely youthful demographic. The advertisements will be integrated in a way that aims to be non-intrusive, maintaining the user experience that Roblox is known for. As of right now, Roblox has 71.5 million daily active users in the 13 and older age group.  For more on this, click on the link below: https://variety.com/2024/gaming/news/roblox-video-ads-users-13-and-up-1235987232/ Thanks for reading this edition of Kavanah Media's Weekly Marketing Rundown! Industry insiders have revealed that marketers could start buying ads on Threads as early as the second half of this year, according to information shared with ad executives. This development marks Meta's continued expansion of its advertising landscape just over a year after Threads was launched. While the specifics of how these ads will be integrated into Threads remain under wraps, discussions so far have focused more on the timeline of the rollout rather than the exact details of the ad placements. The guidance addresses the contentious issue of "consent or pay" models used by some platforms to obtain user consent for data processing. Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, has been requiring users in the EU to consent to being tracked and profiled for ad targeting purposes since November 2023, or opt to pay a monthly subscription fee for ad-free services. However, the EDPB views this binary choice as potentially problematic, citing concerns about an imbalance of power between individuals and data controllers. Despite Meta's claims that its subscription model complies with EU laws, the EDPB's opinion challenges the notion that the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) explicitly sanctioned such models. The Board emphasizes that the CJEU's ruling did not focus centrally on subscription models and suggests that Meta's interpretation may be flawed.  The EDPB's guidance as of now is simply an opinion, though it is certainly possible that the EU makes that opinion law before too long.  For more on this, click the link below: https://techcrunch.com/2024/04/17/edpb-consent-or-pay-opinion/?guccounter=1 Thanks for reading this edition of Kavanah Media's Weekly Marketing Rundown!
